With our latest collaborative release right around the corner, we got together with artist Bart Cooper for a little Q&A session to get the inside the mind of the maker! This collaboration has been in the works for quite some time now... We actually started working with Bart on this project long before COVID-19 was even a thing (ahh, the good ol' days..). But, because of the virus, we were forced to postpone the project for months as we figured out how to navigate through this changing world—including how to continue safely manufacturing products during a global pandemic.
Known for his bold and beautiful designs, we're excited to have Bart's artwork grace our newest artist edition coat and hood. Bart draws inspiration for his captivating works of art from all kinds of interesting sources. Join us as we follow Bart down his creative rabbit hole and get to know the man behind the art. Read on and learn all about the one and only, Bart Cooper.
Q: How long have you been an artist?
I have been creating since the age of three. When I was younger, my favorite thing to draw was a cartoon called the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Of course, it was nice that they were named after great artists themselves.
Q: What made you want to be an artist?
What made me want to be an artist... Interestingly enough, it feels like my entire life has just continued to pull me in that direction. No matter what I did, I was always drawn to art throughout my time in school.
Who are some of your personal favorite artists?
Leonardo Da Vinci, Norman Rockwell, Ernie Barnes, Gustav Klimt, Lawrence Alma-Tadema to name a few.
Besides SpiritHoods, are there any other brands or personalities you’d love to collaborate with or do a commissioned piece for?
I would love to work with some great brands like Mercedes, Apple or Puma. Things I love. Plus, I like that these brands have been consistent in how they present themselves.
Q: What’s your favorite animal?
Favorite animal is the Tiger. Just something about a tiger that I feel is majestic.
Q: We heard you might've been a zoologist if art didn't work out for you... is that true?!
Yes I was! I love nature and studying animals. I’m always researching and learning more about them. Their behaviors. Their habitat. Their purpose on this planet and how they contribute to the system of life. What’s more interesting is: If we as humans were to suddenly become extinct, the earth would thrive. If some animals were to become extinct, life as we know it would be finished!
Q: Do you have any other secret passions you want to share with us?
I’m a history buff. Love history!
Q: What’s one piece of advice you’d give an aspiring artist?
Learn the rules and formulas of art. Then break them.
